You Have No Influence on who The President Picks As GES Boss– Education Ministry replies Teacher Unions
The Education Ministry has responded to teacher unions that have spoken out against the selection of the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Following the expiration of Professor Opoku Amankwa’s contract, Dr. Eric Nkanasah was appointed as the next Director-General of the GES.
However, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) vehemently opposed Dr. Nkansah’s appointment on Thursday. Angel Carbonu, President of NAGRAT, stated on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen that Dr. Nkansah is unqualified for the position since he is not a trained teacher.
“Dr. Eric Nkansah is not the suitable person; he is not qualified, he lacks aptitude, he lacks knowledge, and he lacks the competence to be Director-General of the Ghana Education Service,” he said.
The Ghana National Association of Private Schools has also weighed in on the debate, calling the appointment illegal.
The organization cites provisions 67(1), 68(1), and 79 (1) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, Act 1023, to argue that “it is a blatant violation of the teacher professionalism in terms of the appointment and hence does not support it.”

“GNACOPS strongly suggests that the appointment mechanism of the Director General of GES be carefully examined from the standpoint of service and that it be limited to only Professionals in the Education Sector.”
Kwasi Kwarteng, the Education Ministry’s Spokesperson, is certain that Dr. Nkansah is the ideal guy for the post.
Mr. Kwarteng emphasized that the Ministry will not take into account the opinions of the Teacher Unions and that the Teacher Unions have no capacity to influence who the President picks as GES chairman.
“We reject their rejection and urge on them to at least display some kind of respect to the number one gentleman of the nation,” he told JoyNews.
“We want to let the unions know that it is not within their prerogative or position to select who the President appoints to lead GES.” Dr. Nkansah holds a Ph.D. in Financial Economics from the University of Zululand in South Africa (2015-2018), a Master of Business Administration (Finance) from KNUST Business School in Ghana (2008-2010), and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Economics from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana (2002 –2006).
